Nest Box Program

As part of Arbor Week 2008, students from Wodonga Senior Secondary College made a number of nest boxes and placed them in Willow Park while students from Belvoir School planted species that would support birds and animals that might take up residence in the boxes by providing food and additional habitat. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Natural Resources Conservation League, City of Wodonga, Ron Herbert and the Schools in achieving this project.

Recently, three members (Bart, Ali and Wilma) renumbered the nest boxes in the park and mapped them using geographic information systems. You can view the GIS map as .jpg (approximately 400KB) or the GIS map as .pdf (approximately 1MB). The location of the box, its type, orientation and number can be seen on the map. This mapping will form part of a small research project. By monitoring what is using the boxes, over a few years we can see if bearing and/or height and/or ledge or no ledge have any impact on the use.

You can help by taking notice of what is using the boxes and then emailing your observations (including the number of the box) to: newsletter@friendsofwillowpark.org.au.

Please note that some boxes have two numbers – a number on the side and one on the bottom. It is the number on the bottom of the box that is relevant.

We hope to expand the nest box program along the House Creek corridor in future.
